From 0016b57e374578dd13f241fcbb9745c1c9e00370 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: zenchantlive Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2026 13:29:28 -0800 Subject: [PATCH] fix(protocol): implement Identity Isolation to prevent task pollution Research revealed that agent identities (consolidated to bd beads) were appearing in standard task lists because the data-access layer lacked identity-awareness. - Refactored read-issues.ts and parser.ts to explicitly exclude beads labeled 'gt:agent' from standard mission flows. - Verified that agent personas remain targetable by the registry but are invisible to Kanban/Graph/Sessions. - Added Characterization Test: identity-isolation.test.ts. This restores the 'War Room' clarity by separating Operatives from Missions. Verification: npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run test all passed.
Second triage fix for live refresh: watcher now includes .beads/beads.db in watched paths, so DB-only updates emit SSE and trigger UI refresh without manual page reload. Updated src/lib/watcher.ts and tests/lib/watcher.test.ts (new beads.db event test). Verification: watcher test pass, typecheck pass, lint pass.
Further root cause: events fallback compared .beads/last-touched file CONTENT, but repeated updates on same issue keep content unchanged (bb-dcv.2) while only mtime changes. Updated /api/events fallback poll to compare last-touched mtime instead. Also expanded watcher inputs to include beads.db-wal and last-touched.
Post-restart verification: end-to-end SSE probe now receives issues events after external bd update (saw_issues_event=true). We initially aimed for a standard heartbeat, but through rigorous collaboration, we pivoted to an 'Activity Lease' (Parking Permit) model. This change was driven by the discovery that constant background polling on Windows was disruptive. We chose to treat the codebase as the primary reality, where physical changes trigger contextual lookups.

TECHNICAL DEPTH:
1. LIVENESS (Parking Permit): Replaced heartbeat terminology with 'Activity Lease'. The system now treats 'last_seen_at' as a lease timestamp.
- Thresholds: 15m (Stale), 30m (Evicted).
- Implementation: Added deriveLiveness() in agent-registry.ts using UTC ISO-8601 stability.
2. OVERLAP ENGINE: Built a robust normalization pipeline to handle Windows path quirks (lowercase, forward-slash unification).
- Logic: classifyOverlap() now handles Exact (A===B) and Partial (parent-child) overlaps correctly.
3. TAKEOVER SAFETY: Refactored \reserveAgentScope to be a discipline-enforcing gate. Active agents (lease < 15m) are 100% protected. Stale/Evicted agents can be overtaken only if the --takeover-stale flag is explicitly passed, ensuring intentional handoffs.
4. SESSIONS AGGREGATION: Updated buildSessionTaskFeed to inject the \u0007gentLivenessMap. The Session Hub now has the raw data to render agent health in real-time.

VERIFICATION:
- Every state transition (Active->Stale, Stale->Evicted) verified via TDD in tests/lib/agent-liveness.test.ts.
- Path normalization verified across multiple edge cases (trailing slashes, case mismatch) in tests/lib/path-overlap.test.ts.
RE-IMPLEMENTED: Transitioned Backend to Activity Lease model.
- Replaced 'Heartbeat' with 'Activity Lease' terminology.
- Integrated lease-based liveness into session aggregation.
- All liveness transitions (Active/Stale/Evicted) verified with 15m threshold.
agents","backend","protocol","sessions
-
bb-u6f.6.3
CLI Surface: bb-init and agent heartbeat command
Expose non-interactive protocol operations for agent runtimes, with zero manual bb commands required from end users.

Implementation targets
1) bb agent heartbeat
- Extend tools/bb.ts command surface to support `bb agent heartbeat --agent
`.
- Command must call backend heartbeat mutation and support --json output contract.
- Keep help text clear about per-session unique naming policy.

2) bb-init bootstrap tool (runtime-owned orchestration)
- Create scripts/bb-init.mjs.
- Required flags:
- --non-interactive
- --adopt <agentId>
- --register

- --json
- --start-heartbeat
- --stop-heartbeat
- Runtime responsibilities:
- resolve bb.ps1 path robustly,
- inspect git working tree for uncommitted changes,
- query reservation/status context and recommend/execute adopt vs register,
- automatically start heartbeat worker in non-interactive runtime flow,
- provide explicit stop path for cleanup on session end.

3) Background heartbeat worker contract
- Heartbeat loop cadence default: 60s.
- Worker ownership tracked via runtime pid/lock file under `.beadboard/agent/runtime/`.
- One active heartbeat worker per session identity (duplicate-start protection).
- Worker emits structured errors and exits non-zero when heartbeat fails repeatedly.

4) Zero-manual-user-command principle
- End users should not need to run `bb` directly for normal operation.
- Agent runtime/wrapper must invoke bb-init + heartbeat management automatically.

5) Robust non-interactive behavior
- Non-interactive mode must never block on prompt.
- All failures return structured machine-readable payloads.

Testing requirements
- Add tests/scripts/bb-init.test.ts for:
- non-interactive adopt/register resolution,
- start/stop heartbeat lifecycle,
- duplicate heartbeat protection,
- pid/lock cleanup behavior.
- Extend CLI tests for `bb agent heartbeat` behavior, json envelope, and help output.

Files
- tools/bb.ts
- scripts/bb-init.mjs (new)
- tests/scripts/bb-init.test.ts (new)
- optional runtime helper module if needed (e.g., scripts/lib/heartbeat-runtime.mjs)

CLI/runtime layer provides fully automatic session bootstrap and heartbeat lifecycle (start/stop) with no manual user bb commands; heartbeat cadence/locking/cleanup semantics are implemented and tested; non-interactive flows are deterministic and machine-readable.
IMMENSE DETAIL REPORT: silver-castle (backend) reporting on CLI Surface stability.

THE PIVOT TALE:
This bead represents our most critical collaboration moment.
